Snug
As the doors opened I was met with darkness and silence. I was baffled, why had they named this place the ‘land of noise’. The others continued humming seemingly unaffected by the incongruence of the situation. Though very subtly, something started to shift, we on our perches, we’re in movement with our humans.
Our humans’ paces quickened as they carried us through the darkness. The faster they moved, the quicker our surroundings filled with light. Eventually, I could hear the noise and the closer we got to the light, the louder it got. Then in a rush, an eruption of sound and blinding light that eviscerated the incongruence I felt. This was the ‘land of noise’.
There was too much to take in; initially, I couldn’t comprehend anything other than the blue sky, white clouds, and green grass. This bewilderment soon subsided and the keenness of my senses settled upon me, bringing an astonishing realization. My human was exquisite and the collection of humans crowded together cheered for them as they moved.
I graciously basked in this admiration that was not meant for me. I was lost in reverie when one of the others vibrated sadness, then another shook with frustration, and finally one wobbled in resignation. They were lost in nightmares not reverie, their humans were not well liked and so they didn’t get to experience what I did.
Their emotions tempered my euphoria so I asked, “what makes a human great?”
One convulsed, “Why don’t you ask them.”
