Snug
On the way back to the resting place, my friend opined about many things, apparently forgetting about the embarrassing event earlier in the day. I however did not forget.
After a brief goodbye my friend placed me with the others and after all the humans were gone I asked, “have any of you ever spoken to a human before?”
“No”, they shook in unison, and a few of them rattled in glee.
“Why didn’t you tell me, everything almost went terribly wrong!”
“You never asked” was their simultaneous response.
My shock faded to anger and I sulked. I sat there silently until my human again arrived.
Although I was in a foul mood, my human’s lighthearted emanations cheered me. As I retook my perch I communicated for the first time since my discussion with the others. “I’m sorry.”
“Why are you sorry?” my human asked with a smiling face.
“I put you in jeopardy by making contact with you” I said with a hint of shame.
“Think nothing of it!” my human exclaimed, “this is so cool, we can talk!”
I smiled, reassured by this warm acceptance of what should not be possible. Before we entered the land of noise the human mosied over to an indoor mirror and for the first time, I saw myself.
“What am I?”
“Well can’t you see? We are in front of a mirror.”
“I do see, and yet I do not know. The object of myself has no significance to me. ”
“You’re a…”
The suspense!
