Grey hair streaked across the hairs on Xavier’s temples. Lost in thoughts about the passage of time, he moved his hands along his scalp. When did I get old… He flopped down on the bed and sighed loudly. Despite everyone else’s opinions on the matter,Bakala, Central African Republic, still hadn’t grown on him, but this is where the data says the tremors would hit, so this was home, for now. In the middle of the country, that’s in the middle of Africa. He picked up his satellite phone, “Jake, I’m up. Let’s go over it again. What do you mean it doesn’t matter? Yes, I understand that. Hello?...” Grrrr

Xavier ran over to the pop up HQ, Jake was already there, brow knitted, staring at the giant projector size map. He scrunched up his nose as he drew a black arrow moving north from Bakala, then one moving south as well. He put a sticky note on Libya and one on South Africa; he spoke without looking at Xavier, “there isn’t much we can do…this is going to crack the Earth. Our time would be better spent on other endeavors”, he said, slowly turning Xavier’s way.

“Jake, we’re still waiting, your nanotech is beyond our capabilities to deploy at the moment.” Xavier turned as Ingrid and Beth entered the tent, “would you guys tell him?” Ingrid shrugged.

“I actually agree with him, we should choose a path and go all in on it. Saving Earth is feeling more and more like an exercise in futility. We should focus on an escape plan, but that’s just me, Beth, what do you think?”

“What about all the people, can’t we help them, I’d like to try…?”

Xavier grasped onto that answer, “see Jake, I’m not the only one who thinks so!”
